The boundaries of a peer support relationship need to be agreed. Once agreed, they must be respected by both parties. This respect by each party means experiences that are shared in confidence create mutual obligations. Then these Mutual obligations that ensure that this shared knowledge is not used inappropriately. This includes other social or work situations that occur outside.

Each peer support partner negotiates their personal boundaries. They thus protect their personal space. The respecting of these boundaries is essential to create a safe environment. It will preserve the mutual trust that enables the peer support relationship. Then the peer support relationship will remain effective.
