Navigator Service

For Survivors of sexual harm at Dilworth

A National Service – Run by Survivors for Survivors

Welcome To The Navigator Service.

This is a place where Survivors of Dilworth can get real support and direction towards a better quality of life.

Definition of Survivor

This programme will be available to former Dilworth students living in New Zealand who are survivors of sexual abuse that occurred while they were at school. Within the body of this webpage the word ‘Survivor’ will be used to express the above definition.

  • The Navigator Service is a contracted service delivered by Better Blokes Tautoko Tāne Tāmaki Makaurau. We are part of a national organisation.
  • Staff are Survivors. It’s a place where you can talk to someone who has experienced sexual harm.
  • Dilworth Trust is funding the service, but we are not Dilworth. We are an independent Support Service that has existed for more than 15 years, supporting sexually abused men from all over New Zealand, from all walks of life.
  • It’s completely confidential and totally private. This is very important to us all. You are not alone.

  • It’s for you if you’re in prison.
  • It’s for you if you’re in a mental health service.

What Is The Navigator Service?

The Navigator Service can offer you support and offer you direction so that you can find a better quality of life.

You will be connected initially to a peer support worker who has a lived experience of sexual harm at Dilworth.

Your peer support worker will help you navigate appropriate services around New Zealand. He will walk beside you, supporting you to find your own direction.

The support may include:

  • Self-help (online, telephone services or in person)
  • One-on-one peer support
  • Group peer support
  • Subsidised therapy sessions
  • Free counselling services
  • Community supports
  • A combination of the above

Why A Navigator Service?

Dilworth Trust has acknowledged the necessity to provide ongoing support to Survivors. This Contracted Service reflects that acknowledgement.

By contracting Better Blokes Tautoko Tāne to deliver the Navigator Services, Survivors have access to a national network of high-quality peer support services.

These services are completely independent of Dilworth, including the Dilworth Redress Programme.

The Navigator Service will run as a two-year pilot programme, starting in March 2026. We will continually review and improve the Service based on Survivor feedback, alongside a strong organisational goal from Better Blokes Tautoko Tāne to make the Service work for all Survivors of Dilworth.

What Can I Expect?

  • You can expect to be listened to.
  • You will be respected as an individual.
  • You can expect privacy and confidentiality.
  • You can expect understanding from men that are also Survivors of sexual abuse.
  • What you talk about, and the pace and detail are led by you.

Who Is The Peer Support Worker?

Your trained peer support worker is Chris Adamson, a Dilworth Old Boy and Survivor 1975 – 1979.

Is There A Cost To Me?

Services offered by the Navigator Service have no cost (with one exception explained below).

Better Blokes Peer Support Services are also free of charge, for as long as you need. We can help connect you with other organisations that offer free support too.

Services Incurring Costs:

  • If you want to keep seeing a therapist after your six-months of funded Dilworth Redress Programme therapy ends, the Navigator Service provides for additional sessions.
  • You can have up to four follow-up sessions each year during the two-year pilot offered at very low cost.
  • You will be asked to contribute a small portion of the fee (around 10-15%). For example, if a session costs $200, you would pay around $20–$30 and the Navigator Service will cover the rest.

How Do I Get Access?

You can contact the Navigator Service peer support worker by email or phone at any time.

If you call outside of hours, please leave your contact details and we will follow up with each man and explain the Service directly with you.

Availability is Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
