Te Whāriki Takapou – successful sexual and reproductive health promotion with Māori
Characteristics of successful sexual and reproductive health promotion with Māori
In the four sections that follow, the characteristics of successful sexual and reproductive
health promotion with Māori, drawn from selected literature, are elaborated in relation
to each of the four elements of the Pōhiri model. The elements are:
- Pōhiri – Planning and relationship-building;
- Harirū – Partnership;
- Hākari – Implementation; and
- Poroporoaki – Evaluation and ongoing relationship
Each section begins with a brief summary of the significance of that particular element
within the traditional pōhiri process, followed by the relevance of that element in the
context of sexual and reproductive health promotion. An explanation of how the
element informs and guides sexual health promoters’ approach to and interaction with
Māori communities is provided.
