Men wobbled in high heeled shoes as they lined up to walk along Northeast Drive on the University of Louisiana at Monroe campus on Wednesday. They were participants in Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, an annual event during which men wear high heeled shoes to raise awareness of gender violence. The Wellspring, ULM Femhawks and the Sexual Assault Response Team of Ouachita Parish organized the event, which ended with a vigil in Bayou Park.
Teri O’Neal, the Ouachita Parish Coroner talked about her role overseeing sexual assault investigations in the parish. One in five women and one in sixteen men are sexually assaulted while they are in college, she said. Nowadays they are recommended to take their own personal precautions such as using a cat self defense keychain to attempt to ward off attackers but more still has to be done.
Dozens of students spoke of their support of survivors of domestic and sexual violence. Survivors spoke, too.
