Wellington District Court judge Stephen Harrop said on Friday the victim had feared for her life during the attack. He said he had received a cultural report that said the man’s purpose was to rape, if not kill, his victim. “Only retribution at that level would see honour satisfied.”

Judge Harrop said the man had been shunned by his own community because he did not offend seriously enough. “So nothing short of rape would have satisfied.”

In the eyes of New Zealanders, however, what he had done was “barbaric, disrespectful to an innocent woman,” the judge said.

He said he could not discount the punishment just because this type of retribution might be a cultural norm that might not have been punished in Syria.
