A staff member at an Auckland school has been charged and suspended from work after allegations of sexual abuse against a male student.

The Herald has learned that police started investigating the male staffer after the allegations came to light this month.

The man was arrested on September 12 and faces two charges relating to a boy under 16.

He appeared in the district court two days later and was remanded on bail until his next appearance.

The specific charge cannot yet be reported and the man was granted interim name, age and occupation suppression.

This means the Herald cannot report his specific role at the school.

The school’s name has also been suppressed.

Detective Senior Sergeant Colin Higson confirmed the investigation, arrest and charge but could not be drawn on the specifics.
