Police said the man talked his way into the woman’s house by claiming to be looking for his daughter. A prolonged sexual assault followed.

“We’re determined to catch this guy because it’s a nasty assault,” Basham said.

Basham said family, friends, police and relevant agencies were supporting the victim, who had several physical injuries.

She had undergone a medical examination and been interviewed by police, but was not in hospital.

The offender was described as a clean-shaven and well-spoken Pacific Island or Maori man, who is over 6ft, or 1.8 metres tall, with short black hair, in his late 30s or 40s.

At the time of the attack, he was thought to be was wearing blue jeans with a white T-shirt, grey hooded sweatshirt, brown jacket, and brown footwear.

Basham said it was important for people to know this description might not be totally accurate, as victims could have trouble remembering these details.
