A North Canterbury teacher has been charged with 11 counts of sexual abuse against a teenager.

The 44-year-old was granted interim name suppression when he appeared in the district court on Tuesday morning.

No plea was entered.

He has been charged with eight counts of indecent assault, two of sexual violation and one of rape. It is alleged the offending happened over a number of years.

Judge Raoul Neave granted him bail.

The man is expected to appear and enter a plea on October 22, for the historical charges, which date from November 2013 to May 2017.

The offending allegedly took place in Loburn, Pegasus and Oxford.
