This, said Judge Robert Spear, showed a lack of insight into the true nature of his “horrible” offending.
People such as Potter had a tendency to treat child sexual abuse images as something akin to a television show, that they viewed remotely.
“If it was not for people like you there would not be a market and therefore the children would not be exposed.”
From a starting point of 30 months in prison, Judge Spear made reductions in recognition of Potter’s ailments and his plea of guilty, which brought the sentence down to 19 months.
Potter was suitable for home detention and an address in Ōhaupō was available, so the judge converted the sentence to one of nine months and two weeks of home detention.
It is a condition of that sentence that he not posess or have access to any device capable of accessing the internet or storing electronic information.
