“We’re determined to catch this guy because it’s a nasty assault,” Kapiti Mana area commander Inspector Paul Basham said.

Police confirmed he had not been found on Wednesday morning.

Police would not know if the man was local until he was caught, but Basham said this type of assault often involved a local offender or one who had links to the area.

The man is known to have been to at least one other address in the immediate area with the same story, and police are keen to hear from anyone else he may have approached, or anyone who saw an unusual stranger or any suspicious activity in Waihemo St, Kokiri Cres and Warspite Ave, up to and including Waitangirua Mall.

Basham said there was a good chance the man would have made himself known to someone through his suspicious behaviour.

He is described as a clean-shaven and well-spoken Pacific Island or Maori man, who is over 6ft, or 1.8 metres, tall, with short black hair, aged between 35 and 45.

At the time of the attack, he was wearing blue jeans with a white T-shirt, grey hooded sweatshirt, brown jacket, and brown footwear.

A woman who lives down the street from where the attack took place said she believed she had seen the attacker early on Friday morning.

She woke just after 5am to the sound of dogs barking. When she went outside, she saw a hooded man lurking down the street.
