Google asked NZTA to check the times on other journeys, “because we do a lot of driving” and most of the other algorithms it used in New Zealand were “fairly close”, Harland said.
“This particular route came up because it has so many difficult bits.”
A NZTA spokeswoman confirmed Google adjusted its estimated driving time from Queenstown to Milford from three hours and 19 minutes to three hours and 50 minutes – a 31-minute increase.
“They had to do the adjustment manually as there is no cellphone coverage in Milford Sound to provide Google map with real time data from users.”
The estimate was still on “the low side”, she said.
